An American Airlines employee died when his vehicle crashed at an airport in Texas

An American Airlines employee died when a vehicle he was driving crashed into a jet bridge at an airport in Texas.

The ground service vehicle crashed on the tarmac at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas at around 2 p.m. Thursday, local police told ABC News in a press briefing.

Destiny Silva of Austin Police told reporters that the incident was being investigated as a suspected accidental death.

The incident occurred outside the terminal where aircraft park, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said in a statement on Twitter.

Emergency medical services responded to the injured employee but pronounced the worker deceased as a result of the "tragic event," the airport said in its statement. There was no any significant impact to its operations.

An American Airlines representative told Insider: "We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time."

An employee of Piedmont Airlines, an American Airlines subsidiary, died in an accident on New Year's Eve last year at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama after the worker was "ingested into the engine," the National Transportation Safety Board said in January.

The NTSB said the accident occurred as an American Airlines plane was parked at the gate with its brake set when the employee was pulled into the jet engine.
