A woman was shocked to discover her viral home renovation offended viewers, who thought it was insulting to the men in her life
- Emma Ganzarain moved into her boyfriend's apartment a year and a half ago.
- In November, she shared images on TikTok showing some changes they made to the living space.
A woman was accused of trying to "fix the men" in her life because of changes she and her boyfriend made to his apartment after they moved in together. She said she can see why people were offended, but she never expected the negative response.
Emma Ganzarain, who lives in Oslo, Norway, told Business Insider she's been with her boyfriend for two years, and moved into his apartment a year and a half ago.
Ganzarain, 26, said her boyfriend wanted to make some changes to the apartment but doesn't care much for interiors. When Ganzarain moved in, they embarked on making changes that they both liked, she said.
So far, they've made changes to the kitchen, living room, and floors.
When Ganzarain, who has been sharing updates about the renovation process on TikTok, shared a slideshow of before and after pictures of the couple's progress on November 2, it blew up, receiving 8 million views and becoming her most viral video to date.
Many commenters expressed a negative opinion of the transformation, and some referred to the new look as "sad beige," BI previously reported.
Some commenters also suggested that they thought Ganzarain had made changes against her boyfriend's preferences, seemingly based on the way the apartment appeared to look before she had moved in.
"His soul is no longer in that space. stop trying to fix the men in your life and learn to love them for who they are and the way they want to decorate," read one top comment, which received over 186,000 likes.
"Every man needs a woman to drain the color and life from his home Love the office space you created," another user wrote.
Ganzarain speculated that her post might have gone viral because of the caption, which read, "All men needs a woman in their life," saying that she thought this caused some users to feel offended. She told BI she chose this caption because she and her boyfriend had joked that his apartment needed "a feminine touch."
She also said she thinks that commenters assumed that her boyfriend wasn't involved in the redecoration of the apartment, which she said was a misconception.
Ganzarain told BI she took the lead when it came to making suggestions for changes to the living space, which her boyfriend would then weigh in on, either approving or rejecting them. She said she had a preference for neutral colors, adding, "We really liked that calm vibe when you have like beige and white, and I feel like it looks really clean and aesthetic."
The 26-year-old said she was proud of the changes she made to the apartment, and that the online negativity was surprising to her.
"They don't know us or me or anything," she said, adding, "If they want to say that, I mean, what can you do, it's the internet and I guess you kinda have to be prepared to get a lot of those comments if you post online."
Ganzarain told BI that her boyfriend often says that he loves the way the apartment looks now, and said that the negative comments have not been bothering her much.
She said she's been responding to the online negativity with "funny comments," adding, "At the end of the day, it's an apartment that we're happy we can stay in and happy we are able to renovate it how we like it."
Ganzarain's boyfriend did not respond to BI's request for comment.
