A Lufthansa flight from LA to Germany made an 'unscheduled landing' in Chicago after passenger's laptop caught fire

A Lufthansa flight was forced to make an "unscheduled landing" at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after a passenger's laptop caught fire on Monday night, the airline confirmed to Insider.

The flight from Los Angeles to Frankfurt, Germany made an emergency landing at O'Hare Airport as a "precautionary measure," due to a small fire in the cabin. The fire was caused by a passenger's overheating laptop, Lufthansa said.

The fire was put out in-flight before the plane landed. None of the passengers onboard were injured, but two flight attendants were "treated onsite" for smoke inhalation.

Staff on ground are helping passengers and they will be rebooked to their final destinations, Lufthansa said.

"Safety on board was not compromised at any time," it added.

"Lufthansa regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers. The safety of passengers and crews has top priority at all times."

A winter storm causing temperatures to plunge has engulfed parts of the US, and led to severe flight disruptions in the days leading up to Christmas. Over 13,000 US flights were disrupted on Thursday and over 4,500 flights scheduled to fly within, into, or out of the US were cancelled on Friday, according to data. On Tuesday, Southwest cancelled around 2,700 flights, over 85% of all axed flights in the US on the day.
