An international airport in Accra, the capital of Ghana, is charging airlines for letting unvaccinated passengers into the country.

Ghana Airports, a company that operates the country's airports, announced on Monday that airlines will be fined $3,500 for every unvaccinated passenger they bring through Kotoka International Airport, as well as for any passenger who arrives with a positive PCR test.

The new rules apply from Tuesday, it said.

People arriving into Ghana must be fully vaccinated, show a negative PCR test, and fill in a health declaration form.

People who are not from Ghana could be turned away if they don't meet the requirements, at cost to the airline, while Ghanaian nationals who don't meet the requirements have to quarantine for 14 days.

As of Tuesday, the country has recorded about 131,500 COVID-19 cases and just over 1,200 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic started, according to Worldometer.

It said on Friday that cases recorded at the airport made up 60% of the cases in the country over the last two weeks, CNN reported.
