A British Airways passenger is getting $2,550 after a court ruled in his favor when a 'comedy of errors' left his flight on the tarmac for 7 hours
- A British Airways flight in October was stuck on the tarmac for over seven hours.
- Poor weather in London led to airport restrictions before the flight crew timed out.
A British Airways passenger is to receive £2,000 ($2,550) in compensation after his flight was stuck on the tarmac for over seven hours, BelfastLive reported.
Kiemon Stewart, a former Royal Air Force pilot, was traveling from London Heathrow to Belfast on October 2, per the outlet.
Weather warnings were in place for thunderstorms and heavy rain in London that day, causing problems at the airport.
Air traffic control restrictions meant the plane missed its takeoff slot, before it had to return to the stand to refuel. Then the flight was re-crewed after the pilots and flight attendants reached their working time limit.
Passengers were only given a bag of pretzels and a drink as they were stuck onboard. The Airbus A320 eventually landed in Belfast seven hours later than scheduled, per data from Flightradar24.
Stewart went to the small-claims court in Northern Ireland to ask for compensation, describing the episode as a "comedy of errors," BelfastLive reported.
He claimed that the weather was "only a contributory factor" and blamed BA's "operational and commercial decisions and actions" for the delay, according to the outlet.
Because the airline didn't contest Stewart's claims in court, the judge ruled that it must pay him £2,000 ($2,550). BA maintains that the delay was due to weather conditions rather than its own decisions.
"We're sorry for the delay that our customers faced due to air traffic control restrictions put in place as a result of adverse weather across London and the South East of England on the day of their flight," a BA spokesperson told Business Insider.
