  • Sandy Point Farm was built in 1902 for Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
  • His father, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, built the Breakers mansion in Newport.

Rhode Island is full of architectural marvels from the Gilded Age, but these historic properties rarely hit the market.

That's what makes Sandy Point Farm, a 1902 equestrian estate that belonged to a Vanderbilt heir, a rare find.

Sotheby's Concierge Auctions is listing the 6-acre property for $3.5 million. It will open for bidding on October 17.

Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the grandson of railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, built the famous 138,300-square-foot Breakers mansion in Newport in 1895.

Reginald Vanderbilt inherited $10 million from his father, according to his 1925 obituary in Time magazine. When adjusted for inflation, his net worth would have equaled around $180 million in 2024.

An avid equestrian, Reginald Vanderbilt served as the president of the Association of American Horse Shows and the Hackney Horse Society. He also founded the United States Equestrian Federation.

Reginald Vanderbilt was married twice. He and his second wife, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, had one daughter together, also named Gloria. She grew up to be a fashion designer and mother of CNN's Anderson Cooper.

After struggles with gambling and alcoholism, Reginald Vanderbilt died at Sandy Point Farm at age 45 in 1925.
