  • New York City has hundreds of hotels across all five boroughs.
  • Choose from posh luxury, hipster chic, boutique gems, and well-priced stays from name brands.

In a city like New York, your hotel can set the tone for the entire trip.

For example, to sight see in Manhattan, don't stay in Brooklyn or you'll spend most of your stay going back and forth. Similarly, if you've been here dozens of times and want to go off the beaten path, a room in Midtown among throngs of tourists might feel maddening.

Fortunately, there are hundreds of New York City hotels, from five-star luxury to design-forward spots, see-and-be-seen stunners, and rooms from brand names at surprisingly cheap prices.

Insider already reviewed New York's hotel scene in-depth, but the following list represents the ones we're most excited about right now.

The Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC Hotel

A generation ago, the Meatpacking District was the domain of butchers. Today, its cobblestone streets are home to some of the chicest shops and restaurants in Manhattan. The Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC Hotel is steps from top attractions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the High Line, and Little Island, one of the city's newest public parks located at the Chelsea piers.

The hotel showcases cutting-edge art, with works by Banksy and the pioneering street artist Richard Hambleton. Guest rooms feel like private lofts and the rooftop boasts unobstructed 360-degree views, a pool, and elevated fare.

Aloft Harlem

Harlem is synonymous with Black culture and Aloft Harlem is a boutique property within walking distance from the Apollo Theater, live jazz at Minton's Playhouse, and Marcus Garvey Park. The contemporary rooms highlight functional furnishings and welcome pops of color, and the hotel also has a 24-hour gym, a cocktail bar that also serves small bites, and a lounge to relax with a game of pool.

Aloft is also just blocks away from Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster restaurant that serves up Southern comfort food. We recommend trying the Chicken & Waffle with cornbread to share.

The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel

Tucked behind an unassuming facade in the Financial District, The Beekman is a boutique space housed in a landmark building dating back to 1881. Enter into a breathtaking nine-story atrium where the on-site dining and drinking are just as iconic as the common spaces. Rooms are plush and spacious enough.

The Park Terrace Hotel

If your visit is focused in and around Times Square, The Park Terrace is a great pick to be near it all without being thrust into the center and all the noise. It also offers comfortable rooms, amenity closets on every floor for guests' use, a pretty terrace for enjoying a drink with a view, and a stellar breakfast buffet featuring locally sourced ingredients.

The Hoxton Williamsburg

Hipsters make their home in Brooklyn and The Hoxton in Williamsburg enjoys a prime perch amid it all. Staying here comes with amenities that include a collection of in-room books, public spaces with a lineup of cultural events, and a rooftop with Instagram-worthy views of Manhattan that's set to reopen in fall 2021.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

If Williamsburg and all its over-the-top coolness aren't for you, but you'd like to stay in Brooklyn, the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO is a wonderful choice. Reclaimed wood, leafy plants, and neutral colors make it feel like a soothing escape that's more Scandinavian hideaway than big city hotel. The views are also incredible, with full vistas of New York City's skyline, and in some rooms, a front-row seat to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Collective Paper Factory

Queens is one of the most culturally diverse places in the country, if not the planet. Stay in the thick of the melting pot at the Collective Paper Factory in Long Island City, a former paper factory near Socrates Sculpture Park, MoMA PS1, and the Noguchi Museum, and a slew of craft breweries. The hotel has a sun-drenched conservatory, a game room, a 24-hour gym, and rooms with reclaimed furniture, colorful canvases, and flat screen TVs.

PUBLIC Hotel

Located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the PUBLIC Hotel is a great option for visitors looking to spend more time downtown. It's within walking distance of homey restaurants in Little Italy, street vendors in Chinatown, and designer shopping in SoHo. The rooms have a contemporary and loft-like feel with airy, neutral colors and natural wood textures. The hotel also features an onsite cafe, multiple bars (we recommend trying their Pisco Sour cocktail), and a plant-filled rooftop where you can relax with a drink and enjoy the night skyline. If you want to go dancing with an easy commute back to your room, check out House of X, the PUBLIC's sultry underground nightclub, that regularly hosts events with live DJs and dancers.

The Williamsburg Hotel

Also in the heart of Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Hotel offers a relaxing escape with a modern and inviting atmosphere. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and tiled bathrooms, and larger suites also feature private terraces and standalone soaking tubs. One of the hotel's main draws for visitors and locals alike is its rooftop pool and bar, as well as the rooftop Water Tower that offers gorgeous views of Manhattan and live music events several nights a week.

The Library Hotel

This midtown hotel is a book lover's paradise. Conveniently located near Grand Central Station, it's within walking distance of Herald Square, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center. The building, built in 1912, matches its old New York exterior with a cozy lobby filled with wall-to-wall bookshelves and dark wood finishes. The hotel has a rooftop bar that serves literary-inspired cocktails (we recommend the Dante's Inferno, a sweet and spicy combo of mezcal and orange liquor), as well as several common lounges where you can order coffee, tea, and small bites and settle into a good book.

The Pierre, a Taj Hotel

If you're eager to shop at Tiffany's, Bergdorf Goodman, and other iconic flagships on 5th Avenue, the Pierre Hotel is an equally luxurious place to decompress after a long day of walking. Located on the southeast corner of Central Park, the 41-story building's design is timeless, chic, and quintessentially Upper East Side. The rooms are spacious and have marble bathrooms, and many boast an uninterrupted view of the park.

The Pierre has several cafes and a cocktail bar, and also offers laundry, dry cleaning, and even babysitting services for those traveling with kids.
