As a result, locals regularly endure massive crowds, traffic jams, and increased living costs.</p><p><a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-travel-more-sustainably-without-harming-destinations-2022-9">Travel sustainability experts</a> previously told Business Insider that <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overtourism-measures-limit-tourism-going-to-increase-venice-amsterdam-rome-2023-10">overtourism</a> negatively impacts destinations. People love to visit historic cities in Europe and <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-avoid-crowds-us-national-parks-tips-2024-5">popular national parks around the US</a>, but these places simply weren't built to serve the millions of travelers going there during peak seasons.</p><p>It's gotten so bad that popular vacation spots are actively trying to deter visitors rather than attract them.</p><p>Destinations use several tactics to curb tourists, from charging fees and <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/application-requirements-for-americans-traveling-to-europe-etias-2024-2023-7">limiting visitors</a> to implementing reservation systems and <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-cruise-ship-port-ban-north-terminal-adossat-wharf-2023-10">banning large cruise ships</a>.</p><p>However, local governments and residents of some hot spots have incorporated more unique strategies to <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tourists-out-of-control-this-summer-photos-show-2023-7">keep tourists away</a>.</p>
