At least 50 passengers were injured on a Latam Airlines flight on Monday, the New Zealand Herald first reported.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner traveling from Sydney to Auckland experienced a technical problem that caused the jet to drop suddenly, the newspaper reported.

In a statement shared with Business Insider, Latam Airlines said there was "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement."

One passenger, who said she used to be a flight attendant, told the Herald it was the first time she'd experienced such an event.

She said there was a "quick little drop" and "the whole plane just froze."

The outlet reported that seven ambulances and four other emergency vehicles were sent to Auckland Airport after the plane landed.

In its statement, Latam said 10 people were taken to hospital with no serious injuries reported.

Although, the ambulance service told the Herald it had treated 50 people, of whom 12 were sent to the hospital. It added that one person was in a serious condition.

An onward flight to Santiago, Chile was canceled, with a replacement scheduled for Tuesday, the airline said in its statement. "Latam is providing affected passengers with food and accommodation services due to the flight cancellation," it added.

"Latam deeply regrets any inconvenience and discomfort this situation may have caused its passengers and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.
