A DIY creator blew up on TikTok with a crafty decorative trend that maximizes the tiny space on doorway hinges with homemade figurines.

On December 29, a TikToker who goes by Colby and regularly shares DIY decor suggestions, posted a video with an on-screen caption that asked viewers if they'd ever heard of "hinge heads."

In a video voiceover, Colby said people would either love or hate the trend she had discovered, which involved adding "little trinkets" to the tops of door hinges. She said it "sounds ridiculous" but thought they were cute, and showcased some homemade examples that resembled mushrooms.

She also attached a small magnet to the bottom, so they would remain on the metallic surface of the hinge without falling off.

"Then every time you walk by, you get a little hit of dopamine because it's a teeny, tiny treat for yourself," she said in the video.

The upload blew up with 1.4 million views and over 2,300 comments, many of which seemed totally charmed by the diminutive decoration, which they appeared to be learning about for the first time too.

"You don't know what you've just awoken in me," one viewer wrote in the most popular comment which received 17,800 likes.

Others wrote that they wanted to add hinge heads to their own home, or secretly place them on the door hinges at their friends' houses.

One TikToker pointed out that the trend seems to have been around since 2013 at least, but multiple comments beneath Colby's video wrote how difficult it was to buy existing versions online.

In response, Colby posted two tutorials.

One featured a simple hack for those who didn't want to make them from scratch, with instructions to purchase miniature figurines and add putty or magnets so they stick in place on the hinge. The second showed Colby making her own mushroom figurines from scratch, creating the shape on a baking tray using hot glue, and finishing them off with acrylic paint.

Multiple TikTokers have re-created Colby's version and thanked her for the inspiration, while many others wrote they planned to make them too.

In Colby's original video, she included the hashtag #maximalism, which is an approach to decor that rose in popularity during the pandemic, that involves making the most of limited space and experimenting with an abundance of items and bright colors.
