An Orlando-bound Spirit Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville, Florida after a battery caught fire onboard and reportedly injured some passengers and crew onboard.

The flight landed at Jacksonville International Airport around 4 p.m. after leaving Dallas, Texas around 2 p.m., NBC affiliate WTLV in Jacksonville reported.

"All of a sudden just a ton of smoke came out," Kerri Arakawa, a passenger on the plane, told the news outlet.

Arakawa told WTLV the fire was put out in about 20 minutes, and a retired fireman and the flight crew tried putting the fire out with water, but eventually someone found a bucket.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to an "Alert II" with a plane that had smoke in the cockpit, Eric Prosswimmer, the public information officer at the JFRD told Insider over email.

"The fire was already out before landing," Prosswimmer said. "Our crews boarded the plane and double checked that. The original cause of the fire was a battery in the overhead bin in someone's belongings."

Passenger Rocco Chierichella, a retired New York City firefighter, told the WJXT television station that the battery fire stemmed from vape charging in an overhead bin, and that he suffered burns putting the fire out. Insider was unable to confirm whether the battery was attached to a vape, but Spirit told WTLV in a statement that the battery fire was believed to be from a "guest item in an overhead bin."

Prosswimmer told Insider that he believed the fire was caused by a "battery charging pack," but could not confirm whether it was attached to a vape. Spirit Airlines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

One person was taken to the hospital at first, but around 6 p.m., more passengers had to go to the hospital due to the smoke, WTLV reported. Overall, 10 people, including crew members, were admitted to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, according to the report.

"Spirit Airlines flight 259 from Dallas (DFW) to Orlando (MCO) diverted to Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) following what's believed to be a battery fire from a guest item in an overhead bin that was extinguished inflight," Spirit said in a statement to WTLV.

The airline said the plane landed at JAX and was able to reach the terminal.

"We thank our crew and guests for their quick actions to ensure the safety of everyone onboard, and we thank first responders for meeting the aircraft," Spirit added.
