My husband and I went to IHOP for a breakfast date.Jena Brown
- My partner and I spent $40 on breakfast at IHOP so we could try menu items we'd never had before.
- The cupcake pancakes were yummy but way too sweet for an everyday breakfast.
Being married to a morning person means they're always trying to get you to go out for breakfast.
In an attempt to try new-to-us menu items and get out of the house, I asked my husband, Eric, if he wanted to have a breakfast date at IHOP.
He was in the car before I even finished the question.
Here's how everything we ordered at IHOP stacked up.
We went to IHOP for a midmorning meal.
We were excited for our breakfast date at IHOP. Jena Brown
We headed down to the IHOP near our house in Las Vegas.
IHOP is a fast-casual restaurant with nearly 1,700 locations across the US. The chain is known for its pancakes, though the restaurant also serves eggs, waffles, chicken, and dinner options.
We were seated quickly.
There were some empty tables and booths when we got to IHOP. Jena Brown
IHOP was a little busier than expected for a Thursday, but we were seated quickly and managed to snag a nice booth by a window.
We had coffee, water, and menus within five minutes, and our order was taken shortly after.
We started strong with the Oreo-cookie-crumble waffle breakfast combo.
The Oreo-cookie-crumble waffle breakfast combo came with eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Jena Brown
Eric immediately zeroed in on the Oreo-cookie-crumble waffle breakfast combo, which comes with two eggs, hash browns, and a choice of bacon or sausage.
We went with the bacon and ordered our eggs over medium. At $15, this combo was the most expensive option we got.
The bacon was perfect, and the hash browns were nice and crispy. The waffle was topped with a creamy cheesecake mousse, whipped topping, and big Oreo cookie chunks.
Neither of us added syrup since the mousse, cookie chunks, and whipped topping already contributed the perfect level of sweetness.
The Oreo waffle combo was pretty tasty.
My husband was a fan of the Oreo waffle. Jena Brown
When he first tried the waffle, Eric was surprised that the cheesecake mousse tasted sour. However, he thought the sweet crunch of the cookies balanced it out.
He enjoyed the meal but found the flavor to be a little intense and said he wouldn't order it as an everyday breakfast.
I liked the mousse and thought all the flavors went together well. The waffle itself was fluffy and had a nice buttermilk flavor.
I agree that it felt decadent, but I'm a big fan of cookies for breakfast, so I'd order it again.
Next, we moved onto something more savory.
The breakfast crepes were filled and topped with bacon and cheese. Jena Brown
Next, we ordered the breakfast crepes, which were $13.50.
They came filled with scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, a white-cheese sauce, and jack and cheddar-cheese shreds.
I was orginally worried that the dish would be mostly crepes with smaller portions of eggs and bacon, but the filling was impressive.
The bacon was crispy, and the hash browns had a firm, crunchy texture, even with the eggs and cheese sauce.
We both loved the breakfast crepes.
My husband kept stealing bites of the breakfast crepes. Jena Brown
I'm a huge fan of savory dishes, and the tanginess of the white-cheese sauce added an excellent pop of flavor.
Eric thought the sauce almost tasted like a Hollandaise topping and said it kept him coming back for more.
The crepes were satisfying without being too heavy. I practically had to fight Eric for the meal — he ate over half of the crepes.
Finally, we tried the cupcake pancakes.

Finally, we added the cupcake pancakes, which were $12.70, to our order.
They came with a delicious-looking cupcake icing that melted down the side of the pancakes.
Rainbow sprinkles were mixed throughout the batter, giving the whole dish a fun feeling.
The cupcake pancakes were a bit too sweet for us.
The cupcake pancakes felt like a dessert. Jena Brown
I can't imagine adding syrup to pancakes covered in melted icing. They were already so sweet.
I liked them, but compared to the Oreo waffle, the sweetness was a bit overbearing. If the pancakes themselves were thicker, I think they could've offset the sweetness of the icing.
Eric said the cupcake pancakes felt like eating a birthday cake for breakfast. He thought the Oreo waffle felt like a special-occasion treat, but these pancakes seemed like a once-a-year meal.
The dish was fun but too sugary for both of us.
Overall, the breakfast crepes were our favorite.
We loved the meal at IHOP, but the breakfast crepes stood out. Jena Brown
Everything was delicious, but we felt the $13.50 breakfast crepes were the most satisfying part of our $40 meal.
We liked how the Oreo-cookie-crumble waffle breakfast combo came with tons of food, but we felt that the cupcake pancakes, though fun, made a better dessert or treat.
We don't regret ordering anything, but the crepes were the real winner of our breakfast date.
