My family of four recently tried Buffalo Wild Wings.Terri Peters
  • My family of four had dinner at the chain Buffalo Wild Wings for the first time.
  • Our $77 meal included an appetizer, four entrées, fries, and two beers.

Although I'm not a huge fan of traditional bone-in wings, boneless wings and other bar food like burgers, fries, and mozzarella sticks are among my great loves.

My husband and I have never been much on visiting chain restaurants, so we tend to find a local dive bar to enjoy these all-American delights at. But since my teens have started asking to try different chain restaurants, we recently decided to grab dinner at our closest Buffalo Wild Wings.

My family of four piled into a booth at Buffalo Wild Wings right when my husband and I finished our work days, ready for wings, burgers, and a sports-bar atmosphere. Here's how it went.

The first Buffalo Wild Wings opened in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, after two friends who had relocated from Buffalo, New York, were craving Buffalo-style chicken wings.

Today, the chain has more than 1,200 locations and can be found in every US state and worldwide in countries like India and Mexico.

Buffalo Wild Wings specializes in traditional and boneless wings and offers an impressive list of sauce and rub varieties, from original Buffalo to lemon pepper to Thai curry. The menu also has bar-food staples like burgers, fries, wraps, and tacos.

I started my meal by ordering a 22-ounce "tall" glass of Angry Orchard cider, which the restaurant had on tap.

My drink was $8.25 and, since I went with a tall pour, it took me the entire meal to finish. My husband also chose a tall beer, a Samuel Adams Octoberfest, which cost $6. He never needed to order a second glass due to its generous size.

My kids, who usually are all about drinking a soda with their meal, both opted for waters, which were free of charge.

For an appetizer, we shared mozzarella sticks.

I think the mozzarella sticks should've been cooked for longer so they'd be crispier.      Terri Peters

Our $8.50 mozzarella sticks were one of the only disappointing parts of our meal at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Although the size of the appetizer (six pieces) and the marinara dipping sauce were great, the mozzarella sticks seemed like they could use more time in the oven or fryer.

There was no golden-brown color to the outside of the sticks and no cheese pull when we bit into them, a sign to me that the cheese just wasn't quite hot enough.

Still, for under $9, they were a reasonably-priced option to split over a family of four.

The traditional wings were spicy and flavorful.

Buffalo Wild Wings had solid bone-in wings.      Terri Peters

When we order traditional, bone-in wings, we prefer to try the standard hot Buffalo-style sauce at any restaurant.

At Buffalo Wild Wings, we ordered six wings ($10) tossed in standard hot sauce and were impressed with the spice level.

Because the wings weren't a breaded style, they were saucy and messy in the best possible way. We got them with two cups of blue-cheese dressing, though we could've also chosen ranch.

The boneless wings were a highlight for me.

The Asian Zing sauce had a nice flavor.      Terri Peters

My husband and I also shared an order of 10 boneless wings ($12.50) sauced with Buffalo Wild Wings' Asian Zing sauce.

The sauce wasn't incredibly spicy, but it was extremely flavorful with chili, pepper, soy, and ginger notes. The breading on each wing was crispy and delicious and the meat inside each bite was moist and well-cooked.

This was a dish I would absolutely order again if I returned to Buffalo Wild Wings. For me, it was a true highlight of the meal.

My daughter ordered a crispy chicken wrap.

My teenage daughter ordered a classic chicken wrap filled with crispy chicken, cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce for $11.

The wrap came with fries and, altogether, it was a great meal for her. The portion size wasn't too huge and she said it was incredibly flavorful.

She ate the entire wrap and said she'd definitely order it again if she returned to Buffalo Wild Wings.

My son ordered a cheeseburger,

My 15-year-old son's standard order at any restaurant is a plain cheeseburger, and Buffalo Wild Wings was no exception.

At $11.50, Buffalo Wild Wings' all-American burger was affordable and came with a side of fries.

Unfortunately, it ranked pretty low on his ranking of burgers he's gotten at chain restaurants, but I told him that's probably what he gets for ordering a burger at a chicken chain.

We also ordered a side of fries for the table.

Fries can help balance out spicy wing sauces.      Terri Peters

Whenever we eat spicy chicken wings, my husband and I like to order a side of fries as something to snack on when we need to take a break from the flavors and heat.

A side of fries at Buffalo Wild Wings was $4, and my kids enjoyed the fries at this restaurant so much that they finished their own and started munching on ours.

We enjoyed the food we got at Buffalo Wild Wings.      Terri Peters

Overall, we enjoyed the food at Buffalo Wild Wings and would consider returning.

Although the cheeseburger and mozzarella sticks weren't hits, we found the chain had really good wings, perfectly chilled drinks, and fries that really satisfied our cravings.

The Asian Zing sauce on the wings was especially tasty, and I'd also be excited to taste more of Buffalo Wild Wings' 20+ sauces next time we go.
