Toms Auzins/Shutterstock</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>I'm a <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/easy-dinners-for-mediterranean-diet-dietitian-recipes">dietitian on the Mediterranean diet</a>, and I recently went to Greece for the first time.</li><li>I've never really thought to have <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/greek-salad-perfect-easy-desk-lunch-work-2020-3">salad for breakfast</a>, but I'm going to do it at home now.</li></ul><p>I've been following the Mediterranean diet for years. As a dietitian, I know the lifestyle has a long list of impressive health benefits, plus it's full of fresh, delicious food.</p><p>However, practicing its principles to the fullest extent can be a challenge while living in the US — especially in the South. The <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/utah-what-to-eat-drink-regional-foods-2022-6">regional food culture</a> around me doesn't exactly align with a diet of fresh vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats.</p><p>Luckily, I recently took my <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-things-to-do-greece-vacation-with-friends-mistakes-avoid-2024-2">first trip to Greece</a>, where the Mediterranean diet is just a way of life. I was in food heaven, enjoying all of the veggies, olive oil, and wine.</p><p>Along the way, I picked up on some simple foods and dishes that have been easy to include in my regular diet back at home.</p>
