US Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, one of the three men who helped take down a gunman on a high-speed French train earlier this year has been promoted to staff sergeant.

Stone, 23, earned his new rank in an official ceremony Friday at Travis Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA.

The Air Force Times reports that during the three-minute ceremony, Stone was first promoted from airman first class to senior airman. One minute later, he was elevated to staff sergeant.

Stone's new rank takes effect Nov. 1.

Stone, along with his childhood friends, Anthony Sadler and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos disarmed a gunman who tried to attack an Amsterdam-to-Paris commuter train in August. Stone took down the gunman, who was armed with an AK-47 assault weapon, a pistol and a box-cutter.

Months later, Stone was stabbed multiple times near a downtown Sacramento bar in an incident unrelated to the foiled train attack. Stone is recovering from significant injuries related that incident. He was released from a hospital in mid October.

For his bravery in stopping the French train attack, Stone has also been awarded a Purple Heart and an Airman's Medal.
