Six years into the mobile revolution, apps continue to dominate the mobile Web, now by a ratio of more than six to one in terms of time spent. Because smartphones and tablets are our most personal devices, they are a true reflection of our individual interests and cultural trends.
Here are the top-three trends in mobile right now, based on app data from 1.3 billion devices seen by Flurry Analytics each month.
1) Fun first: First and foremost, we want to be entertained and connected to others on mobile. In the first three months of 2014, gaming apps accounted for 32% of time spent on mobile devices; social networking and messaging apps accounted for 28%; and entertainment was 8%. That's more than two-thirds of our time having fun on mobile devices.
2) But increasingly, it's work, too: The average U.S. consumer spent 5 1/2 minutes per day using productivity apps in the first quarter of 2014, vs. 2 1/2 minutes per day in 2013. That's nearly 120% category growth on the year. We are beginning to think of apps for more serious tasks, too.
3) Made in the USA? Probably not: Increasingly, developing countries are becoming major app exporters. As of June 2013, just 36% of apps were made in the U.S. (versus 55% in 2011.)
Without a doubt, the world is living mobile, one app and one experience at a time. Every industry from retail to health care stands to be upended by it.
