The PlayStation 4 is still outselling every other console, including Nintendo's red-hot Switch

  • Sony's PlayStation 4 had another killer year of sales, with just shy of 20 million consoles sold.
  • Over 75 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold since launch in November 2013.
  • Sony is the market leader in video game consoles by a long shot, and that's unlikely to change any time soon.

There are now over 76 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the world.

Nintendo has been busy sucking up all the air in the room with its wildly popular Nintendo Switch game console, but Sony's PlayStation 4 has a quiet powerhouse.

In Sony's latest financial year - from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018 - 19 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold. That puts the grand total of PlayStation 4 consoles sold somewhere in the range of 76 million worldwide since November 2013.

Nintendo's 17.79 million units of the Switch sold (albeit in a far shorter time - just one year) doesn't really compare at all. Sony's the market leader by a longshot, having staked a claim in 2013 and held its ground since.

It's even more impressive in the context of the PlayStation 4 as an aging console that's actually in sales decline. Sony's outright planning for a slowdown in PS4 sales across its next fiscal year, as you can see from the chart below pulled from Sony's latest financial report:

Nintendo, meanwhile, is looking at an increase in Switch console sales in the next year - somewhere in the realm of another 20 million consoles are expected to sell between now and March 31, 2019. But even with incredible sales numbers like that, it'll be near-impossible to catch up to Sony's monumental lead with the PlayStation 4.

That may not matter for Nintendo, of course, as the company is seeing great success by not competing directly with the likes of Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.

As for Microsoft's Xbox One, the situation is less rosy. Estimates put Xbox One lifetime sales in the 30 to 50 million range. The PlayStation 4 routinely outsells the Xbox One in North America, according to data tracking firm The NPD Group. Microsoft no longer reports hardware sales numbers so it's impossible to tell how many Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X consoles have been sold.
