  • Other NFL owners sent Jerry Jones a letter calling his actions "detrimental to the league's best interests."
  • The phrasing of the letter is important, as it directly relates to language in the league's constitution and bylaws that would allow for the ousting of an owner.
  • Chances are, the ongoing battle between Jones and the NFL is far from over.

Tensions remain high surrounding Jerry Jones' war against Roger Goodell and the NFL.

As Ken Belson reported for the New York Times, Jones received a letter from other owners calling his "antics" damaging to the NFL and "conduct detrimental to the league's best interests," a sign from other NFL owners that they will not back down to Jones' threats.

The specific phrasing of the letter is noteworthy, as according to the league's constitution and bylaws, owners who "has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football" can be subject to penalties and/or punishment, even as far as being forced to sell their team.

Jones threatened to sue the league as well as individual owners in an attempt to slow discussions on Goodell's new contract - other owners could certainly argue that such lawsuits are detrimental to the NFL.

Additionally, some owners reportedly believe that Jones personally appealed to Papa John's CEO John Schnatter to disparage the league for a loss of revenue due to declining ratings and poor leadership during the ongoing protests from players.

While the so-called "nuclear option" of forcing Jones to sell the Cowboys is still extremely unlikely, the letter sent to Jones and his lawyer shows that other owners know the power that they have, and aren't going to back down should Jones continue his pursuit to single-handedly control the league.
