It is no secret that more and more NBA teams are relying on three-pointers, and that obsession has reached a new peak this season.
As we near the half-way point of the season, three teams - Rockets, Cavs, and Nets - are on pace to break the NBA record for most three pointers taken in a season, 2,680, set during the 2014-15 season by the Rockets. And the Rockets are on pace to shoot 3,249 threes this season, which would increase the record by 21%.
But it is not just those teams. This season, 31% of all shots are from three-point range. That is up from 28% last season, the largest single-season jump since the 1994-95 season when the NBA experimented with a three-point line that was closer to the basket. In other words, we are nowhere near the peak of three-point shooting as its increase in use is actually accelerating, not slowing down.
