The LG G6 – and other Android phones apart from Google's own Pixels – don't get timely updates.
Skins are also part of the reason why many Android phones don't get updates on time, as part of the delay comes from the phone maker, which has to adapt its skin to work with the new version of Android. Unfortunately, that takes time.
As you can see above, the Google Pixel is ready to download the latest version of Android (version 7.1.2), whereas the LG G6 is stuck on Android 7.0 until LG and whatever carrier you're using is ready to roll out an update.
Updates are a pretty important part of your smartphone experience, as they carry patches that fix security holes, and provide general bug fixes and improvements.
This also applies to pretty much every other Android smartphone apart from Google's own Pixels.
