Fox Business host Lou Dobbs on Monday said special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation into Russia's interference in the US presidential election, is on a "jihad" against President Donald Trump.
Mueller is "behaving like nothing so much as a prosecutor, he is more, if you will, he's on a jihad of some sort, and it is an ideologically inspired jihad," Dobbs said on "Lou Dobbs Tonight."
"The hell with Mueller!" added Dobbs, a vocal Trump supporter. "The hell with what he wants. This is not a game. This nation deserves full-time leadership and no further effort to subvert, to overthrow the presidency of Donald J. Trump. It's ignorant and it's stupid beyond disbelief."
Mueller, a former FBI director and decorated Vietnam War veteran, was praised by members of both sides of the political aisle upon being tapped by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. But many of Trump's defenders, and even the president himself, have largely turned against the man at the center of one of the most publicized investigations in recent memory.
The probe into Russian election interference and whether anyone from the Trump campaign colluded with Kremlin officials has led to indictments or guilty pleas from 32 people, including former Trump advisers.
One of those advisers, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, will stand trial on Tuesday for alleged financial crimes related to his work for Ukrainian politicians. Manafort's trial is the first to be sparked by Mueller's investigation, though it's not directly related to his time with Trump's campaign.
The White House has attempted to distance itself from Manafort amid his legal troubles, downplaying the senior role he had in the Trump campaign.
Appearing on Fox News on Tuesday, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Manafort only had a "brief tenure" with the Trump campaign, adding that Tuesday's trial "has nothing to do with collusion, Russia, nothing to do with the Trump campaign."
