  • In an interview with GameStar.de, Bethesda's Todd Howard said the team would "love" to let Xbox and PlayStation gamers play together in the forthcoming "Fallout 76," but Sony is "not as helpful as everyone would like it."
  • Sony has already been the subject of similar backlash - a few weeks ago players discovered that if they had ever logged in to their Fortnite account on a PlayStation 4, they were unable to use that account on an Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
  • "Fallout 76" will be released in November for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Those who were hoping for cross-platform play between Xbox and PlayStation 4 in the new multiplayer "Fallout" game will probably be disappointed - and Sony is to blame, says a top exec behind the game.

In an interview with GameStar.de, Bethesda director Todd Howard said that he would "love" to have cross-platform compatibility in its forthcoming blockbuster "Fallout 76," but Sony has been "not as helpful as everyone would like it," adding that cross-platform play currently isn't possible.

It's not the first time Sony has been criticized for its approach to cross-platform play.

The company was recently the subject of backlash when Nintendo Switch players found that if they had ever logged in to their Fortnite account on a PlayStation, they were unable to use those accounts on their Switch. The same was true for Switch players who tried to log in to Fortnite on their PlayStation 4 consoles. And starting a new account means abandoning not only your progression in the game, but also any premium items for which you paid real money.

So far it looks like the multiplayer aspect, which is new to the Fallout franchise, will be limited to players using whatever console you're playing on.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has been pushing hard on cross-play: In June, the Nintendo Switch version of Microsoft's "Minecraft" got an update that added cross-play with the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of the game. Microsoft and Nintendo even released a joint ad for the update, essentially calling out Sony for not playing along.

For its part, Sony has said that it's hearing the feedback about cross-play, but hasn't made any specific announcements about how it will addreess it.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
