The United States government filed a new lawsuit against Facebook on Wednesday morning, the same day the social media company announced it had settled ongoing privacy probes with the FTC and SEC over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The Consumer Protection Branch of the US Department of Justice is listed as the plaintiff in the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges Facebook violated a 2012 order from the FTC.

The DOJ is seeking "civil penalties, an injunction, and other equitable relief," it wrote in the filing.

"This action seeks to hold Facebook accountable for its failure to protect consumers' privacy as required by the 2012 Order and the FTC Act," the DOJ wrote in the filing.
