President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un finally met in Singapore on Tuesday.
It was the first time a sitting US president met with a North Korean head of state. Although the summit has been criticized by some, the two leaders ended up issuing a joint statement in which they agreed to work toward peaceful relations.
In any event, the summit yielded a number of rather incredible images.
Many world leaders approved of the summit, stressing the need for diplomacy, but some US lawmakers and commentators criticized the joint statement.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the meeting legitimized a "brutal and repressive" dictator, while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the joint statement granted concessions to Kim with only "vague promises" in return.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro also said the statement was "weak."
Trump also said after the signing that the US would halt "war games" with South Korea in return for denuclearization talks.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said withdrawing troops from South Korea could empower China, and Richard Hass, president of Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump halting the war games were "troubling."
