The 3 plays from the PGA Championship everybody will be talking about today
Good morning! Here are the plays everybody will be talking about on Monday.
Jimmy Walker goes wire-to-wire at the PGA Championship thanks to a timely hole-out from the sand. Walker won his first career major by one stroke over the No. 1 player in the world, Jason Day. The win might not have happened if not for a huge bunker shot on the 10 th hole. Walker had been struggling a bit with the putter, failing to birdie any of the first nine holes. Up by one and in danger of losing the lead, Walker instead sunk the shot for his first birdie of the final round and stretched his lead to two with eight holes to play.
Walker answered Day's incredible approach on 18 with a huge putt of his own. With Day trailing by two on the final hole, the par-5 18th, Day hit an approach shot for the ages, reaching the green in two and leaving himself a makeable eagle putt that could have tied the score ... or so we all thought. At the same moment on the 17th green, Walker was lining up a tough putt for a birdie of his own. He had to step away twice because of the crowd's reaction to Day's shot. But when he finally putted the ball, it barely caught the right side of the cup and fell in. Day would make his eagle putt, but instead of a tie, Walker still led by one and only needed a par on No. 18 to win.
Walker sank the biggest putt of his career to win his first major. Walker only needed a par on No. 18 to win, but he made things interesting when he tried to reach the green in two, instead leaving himself a tough shot over a bunker from the rough. He played that shot safe, just going for the middle of the green. He still needed to 2-putt for the win. His long birdie putt scooted past the hole several feet. That left him with the longest 3-footer of his life. Normally this is an easy putt for a Tour pro, almost a gimmie. But this was for a major and a $1.8 million check, more money than Walker made in six of his first nine seasons on the Tour. But if there were any nerves, they didn't show as Walker stroked the putt with confidence and won the PGA Championship.
