That would break Canada's record (14) for most golds by a country in a single Olympics. The likelihood of that happening is pretty small (Norway is actually favored to win the most golds in Sochi).
The U.S. is strongest in freestyle skiing and snowboarding. There are also gold medal contenders in alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross country (for the first time since 1976!), and speedskating, where Shani Davis is favored in two events.
Here are the Americans who have the best shot at winning gold.
- Mikaela Shiffrin, alpine skiing, women's slalom
- Ted Ligety, alpine skiing, men's giant slalom
- Steven Holcomb, men's two-man bobsleigh
- Kikkan Randall, women's cross country sprint
- Meryl Davis and Charlie White, ice dancing
- Nick Goepper, men's slopestyle skiing
- Hannah Kearney, women's slopestyle skiing
- Maddie Bowman, women's halfpipe skiing
- David Wise, men's halfpipe skiing
- Jamie Anderson, women's slopestyle snowboarding
- Kelly Clark, women's halfpipe snowboarding
- Shaun White, men's halfpipe snowboarding
- Lindsey Jacobellis, women's snowboarding cross
- Shani Davis, men's 1500m and 1000m speedskating
