2. British Prime Minister Theresa May is about to learn whether she must seek parliamentary approval before triggering the formal process of leaving the European Union, a step some investors hope will lessen the chances of an economically disruptive "hard Brexit."

4. ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on his fighters to resist as Iraqi forces are poised to enter the city of Mosul. "Do not retreat," Baghdadi said. "Holding your ground with honour is a thousand times easier than retreating in shame."

8. South Korea's new prime minister nominee said it is his view that the country's president can be subject to prosecutors' ongoing investigation into an influence peddling scandal. No sitting South Korean president has been subject to an investigation by prosecutors.

9. Fitbit shares fell by as much as 30% in after-hours trading, after the company cut its full-year forecast ahead of an anticipated slowdown in growth.

10. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series for the first time since 1908. The Cubs' World Series victory ends one of the most famous title droughts in all of sports.
