The slowest speed recorded in the Cable.co.uk study is a measly 0.12 Mbps.

Depending on where you live in the UK, your internet speed can be faster than California's or slower than Mount Everest's base camp, according to new data released by Cable.co.uk.

The consumer broadband advice site conducted speed tests over the last 12 months throughout the UK to find the country's towns and villages with the fastest and slowest broadband speeds, measured in Mbps (megabits per second).

In the best place to be online, one resident reported a record speed of 195 Mbps - that's approximately 1,625 times faster than 0.12 Mbps, the slowest speed recorded in the worst place to be online.

Of the five most sluggish towns and villages to make the list, two are in Cumbria, while according to the study all have slower broadband than the base camp at Mount Everest, where the connection runs at a minimum speed of 2 Mbps via satellite.

Take a look at the five towns and villages with the fastest broadband, followed by those with the nation's slowest broadband, below. You can also take Cable.co.uk's free broadband speed test to discover your internet speed.
