Representatives of leading mobile phone and broadband services providers will join hands and approach a key inter-ministerial panel to seek reservation of 5G airwaves from Geneva-based International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The companies want ITU to reserve efficient sub-1GHz spectrum in the 614-698 MHz frequency band for commercial 5G services.

Three leading telecom lobby groups, viz. the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), London-based GSMA and Broadband India Forum (BIF), will come together to back reservation of airwaves in the 614-698 MHz frequency band for super-fast 5G mobile broadband networks, people aware of the developments told ET.

The ITU will be holding a meeting in the US next month, inviting senior officials of the department of telecom to articulate India's position on preferred 5G spectrum bands before the next spectrum auction of 5G airwaves.

ITU is a multinational collective effort between governments and private companies to deal with global spectrum management issues.

In case ITU decides to back India's proposal, device makers might go for mass production of 5G phones that will operate on the cost-efficient 614698 MHz band.
