We tried the new gourmet McDonald's burgers that drew a line down the block
McDonald's announced in September that it would be trying new "chef-crafted" flavors that included maple bacon Dijon, pico guacamole, and buffalo bacon. Any of the flavors should be delicious on a burger or a crispy or grilled chicken sandwich. At the McDonald's SXSW VIP party, they only had two available for us to try: Maple Bacon Dijon Burger and the Guacamole Pico Crispy Chicken Sandwich. A trailer out back of the party had turned into a makeshift kitchen for the night.
Let's start with the Maple Bacon Dijon burger, which comes with maple-seasoned bacon, grilled onions, honey Dijon sauce, and white cheddar cheese.
The burger had a giant piece of lettuce, which proved refreshing against all the other ingredients. Bacon strips and the grilled onions were piled high on the white cheddar slice.
The Maple Bacon Dijon is a pretty messy burger to eat between the onions and bacon slices falling out. It's a big burger though, and much more food than you'd get with a normal cheeseburger.
As for its flavor, we found the honey Dijon sauce was just a little too sweet for our taste buds. While the patty was delicious and we liked the grilled onions, the sweet and abundant dressing on it made the lettuce a crucial ingredient to balance it out. If we could order it again, we'd ask for lighter dressing — it's definitely heavy on the maple taste.
Next, we tried the crispy chicken pico guacamole sandwich with a special McDonald's bacon-topped old fashioned made with Bulleit bourbon and crushed cherries. Maybe not the best combination for a tex-mex sandwich, but you won't run into that in any restaurants.
We found the guacamole pico crispy chicken sandwich was light on both the guacamole and the pico de gallo.
Yet, its flavor was delicious — when we at least got a bite of the guacamole. This was the one we'd order again, just next time on a burger and with a bigger chunk of guacamole.
