These buildings are up for an award for the ugliest structure in the UK
Saffron Square, London — This Croydon-based high-rise flat development, designed by Rolfe Judd, was described by one BD reader as a “car crash of a façade" thanks to its ugly jumble of colours.
Poole Methodist Church extension, Poole — The "bland" extension of a church in Poole created by the Intelligent Design Centre didn't impress BD. The nominator called the building "an unimaginative grey box."
Lincoln Plaza, London — BUJ Architects is responsible for this haphazard building, which BD likened to "a grotesque Jenga game of rabid rectilinear blocks of no discernible form or profile."
The Diamond, University of Sheffield — This clunky, garish building was designed by Twelve Architects, and serves as university housing for engineering students. "With the efficiency of a twin-thrust turbo engine, it commits sins on both the outside and the inside," the building's entry on the shortlist entry reads. It also made the list due to its imposing facade and "wasted" interior space.
One Smithfield, Stoke on Trent — The new council offices in Stoke on Trent that have been designed by RHWL Architects have offended BD readers, who used words like "nasty" and "awful" to describe it.
5 Broadgate, London — Designed by Make London, this metallic eyesore was nominated for the Carbuncle Award before it was even completed. One nominator called it "a flak tower that gives nothing back to the city" and a "mute steel fortress."
