Interest around generative AI reached new heights when OpenAI made ChatGPT available for the world in November 2022. People discovered the power of the new technology and started using it to suit their needs. Be it content creation, content writing, composing music or coding, the generative AI chatbot had something in store for everyone. Over time, many existing applications started receiving AI powers in order to boost the users' productivity. And recently, YouTube too got new AI superpowers that can help content creators.

During its "Made on YouTube" event in New York, the platform announced several AI-powered tools aimed at enhancing the creative process without replacing it. A blog post by Google sheds light on what all was announced at the event and the features that we can look forward to.

"At Made on YouTube in New York, we put the spotlight on YouTube’s goal to give everyone the opportunity to express their creativity, build community and drive long-lasting businesses. From the biggest creators and artists to the next generation just getting their start, creators on YouTube can get their hands on the latest AI tools, resources and earning opportunities," Google says in the blog post.

YouTube unveils AI-Powered tools

YouTube is no stranger to AI. The company has been experimenting with AI tools for quite some time, notably with last year’s "Dream Screen," which allowed creators to generate AI-driven backgrounds for Shorts. However, according to Johanna Voolich, YouTube’s chief product officer, this is just the beginning. “It’s about empowering creativity, not replacing it,” Voolich said during the event.

The platform will soon integrate DeepMind’s Veo AI video model into Shorts, allowing creators to produce immersive and imaginative video backgrounds. This could enable creators to bring their ideas to life, such as visualising scenes from a novel or showcasing innovative fashion designs.

In addition to this, DeepMind’s Veo AI will also allow creators to generate 6-second standalone video clips for Shorts. To ensure transparency, YouTube will watermark AI-generated content using SynthID technology and clearly label content created with AI assistance.

Moreover, in the YouTube Studio app, creators will have access to AI as a "brainstorming buddy" through the new Inspiration Tab. This feature will provide suggestions for video ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines, all customised to the creator’s style. By 2025, a shortcut will enable creators to access this tab directly from comments or other videos.

Talking about YouTube’s automatic dubbing tool. The tool generates translated audio in different languages and is being expanded to include Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian. A new capability being tested will allow for more natural-sounding dubbed audio by capturing the speaker’s tone, intonation, and ambiance.

Other features announced during the event

In addition to its AI innovations, YouTube also introduced a host of non-AI features to enhance user experience and monetisation for creators:

TV App enhancements: Creators can now organise their content by seasons and episodes on YouTube’s TV apps, giving channels a more polished, streaming service-like appearance. Additional upgrades include immersive content playback directly from creators’ channels and streamlined subscription options for TV viewers.

YouTube communities: Comments are being revamped with the introduction of Communities, a hub for deeper fan engagement. Communities will include AI-enhanced reply suggestions, community spotlights, and audience metrics to help creators better connect with their audience.

YouTube Hype: To support emerging creators, YouTube is rolling out a new feature called YouTube Hype. Fans can show their support by giving “hype points,” helping boost a creator's visibility. The feature, tested in Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, is set to expand globally.

Monetisation options: YouTube is also expanding monetisation opportunities with YouTube Gifts, powered by Jewels, which allows creators to offer digital items to generate revenue during vertical livestreams. Additionally, the YouTube Shopping affiliate program is expanding beyond the U.S. and South Korea to include Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
