You can bike while working from home with this new desk that lets you charge your devices by pedaling
- Acer announced a new bike desk that will let people charge their devices while they work out.
- The $999 eKinekt BD 3 converts energy from pedaling to charge multiple devices at the same time.
Acer's new bike desk might be ideal for people who made a resolution to exercise more and be more productive at work this year — but you won't be able to start until it comes out in June.
The eKinekt BD 3, which was announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, converts kinetic energy from pedaling into electricity to charge multiple devices at once with its two USB Type-A ports and a USB Type-C port, so people can workout while charging their laptop and phone. The stationary bike desk also has two different modes, so the desk can be adjusted closer to the seat for working, or pushed pack to make more room for exercise.
On the bike desk's companion app, people can track exercise or work progress, calories burned, and how many watts of energy have been generated. The bike desk also has a bag hook and a place for a beverage.
One hour of constant pedaling at 60 revolutions per minute can generate 75 watts of power, according to Acer. The top of the desk and the bike casing are both made from post-consumer recycled plastic, the company said.
But as The Verge pointed out, if riders do use 75 watts in an hour, it will only prevent emissions equal to driving 0.132 miles in a car that uses gas.
The eKinekt BD 3, which Acer said wants to "empower sustainable and healthier lifestyles," will be $999 when it's available in North America in June. It will also be available then in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and available in Taiwan in April.
