Microsoft is rolling out updates to the snipping tool, calculator and mail apps to match the new design changes in Windows 11. The updates are rolling out to Windows 11 users in the Insider Preview program.

While these are all minor changes, they give us a hint about the direction Microsoft is taking with core Windows apps. Despite major design overhauls with Windows 8 and Windows 10, Microsoft has neglected some of these core apps, so bringing them up to date in terms of design is more important than before for the Windows maker.

The new snipping toolMicrosoft

This update will replace the classic but old Snipping Tool with a more modern-looking version. Thankfully, instead of killing the classic version and replacing it with the modern, yet relatively cumbersome Snip & Sketch app, Microsoft has combined the best of both the apps to bring a unified, modern-looking Snipping Tool that is still easy to use.

Once you capture a screenshot, the new Snipping Tool will show up and present options to crop, annotate and more.

The updated calculator appMicrosoft

The calculator app has some minor improvements and several other changes in the backend – it has been rewritten in a programming language called C#. This will allow developers to contribute to the app’s improvements on GitHub.

You can also set the calculator’s theme to dark or light now, regardless of the Windows theme you’re currently using.

The mail and calendar apps have also been updated with the Windows 11 visual style, with rounded corners and other design changes to help integrate them with the new operating system.

Microsoft notes that these updates are rolling out to Windows Insiders, starting with the Dev Channel.
