'Why does my Gboard keep stopping?': How to fix a Gboard app that keeps crashing on your Android phone or tablet

Gboard is one of the best Android keyboard apps out there, but like any application, it runs into errors from time to time.

For example, at times, Gboard will stop itself while you're using it. Eventually, it might keep stopping itself to the point where you can't use its keyboard at all.

This error could be due to a variety of causes, but fortunately, there are a few things you can try to get your Android's Gboard back in working order.

How to stop Gboard from stopping unexpectedly

Make sure Gboard is set as your default keyboard

Gboard needs to be your default keyboard in order for it to work properly. Changing your default keyboard to Gboard might fix the problem. [IMAGE 1]

1. Open your Android device's Settings app and tap on "General" or "General management."

2. Select "Language and input," and then "Default keyboard."

3. In the pop-up that opens, select Gboard.

Clear Gboard's cache

Clearing Gboard's cache can remove any data or files that might be causing problems with the app's functioning. Try clearing the cache and data from Gboard and see if the problem persists. [IMAGE 2]

1. Open the Settings app and tap "Storage."

2. Select "Internal Storage."

3. Tap "Cached data."

4. You'll be asked if you want to clear the cache for all your apps — press "OK."

Make sure that both Gboard and your Android device are updated

Check to see if your device or the Gboard app have any pending updates. If so, installing those updates might patch any potential bugs in Gboard's code.

To update Gboard:

1. Open the Google Play Store and tap the three lines in the upper-left corner, and then select "My apps & games."

2. Under the "Updates" tab, you'll see a list of all your apps that are waiting to be updated. Tap "Update" next to Gboard if it's on the list. If it's not there, it's already been updated.

To update your Android device:

1. Open the Settings app and select "System."

2. Near the bottom of the System menu, tap "System update."

3. On the next page, you'll be told whether your Android has an update waiting.

Uninstall Gboard and reinstall it

If nothing has worked, try uninstalling the Gboard app itself. Once you reinstall Gboard, it's likely to be back to normal.

To do this:

1. Open your device's Settings, then tap "Apps."

2. Scroll through the list until you find Gboard, then tap on it.

3. Tap "Uninstall." When asked to confirm, tap "OK."

You can then reinstall Gboard through the Google Play store. You might need to set it as your default keyboard again after this.
