WhatsApp users on Android may no longer be able to enjoy unlimited backups on Google Drive. At present, there is no quota on the size of the chats and media that you can backup on Google Drive but things may change soon. Google is expected to stop offering unlimited backups and instead put a cap for WhatsApp users on Android.

WhatsApp is planning to notify users about their chat backups reaching the Google Drive storage limit. According to text strings found in the app by WABetaInfo, there are clear mentions of the new changes for Google Drive backups. Users will be notified when their Google Drive storage is almost full when the limit is reached, and also when the changes will take effect.

This clearly hints at Google Drive offering limited backups for WhatsApp chats but there’s no confirmation on how much free storage users would get eventually. For years, Android users have enjoyed unlimited backup on Google Drive for WhatsApp chats and media. It was also an advantage over iPhone users who have to use the 5GB iCloud storage for backups. The process to restore your backed up chats when moving to a new or different phone is also very convenient.

The new change will not be surprising though since Google has already axed free storage for Google Photos. Any photo backed up now counts against your Google Drive storage which is 15GB for everyone. Beyond that you would have to purchase additional storage. It looks like a similar move will be taken for WhatsApp too.
