Elon Musk seems to be having a bad week.

As tens of millions sign up for Meta's Threads, its new Twitter rival, Mark Zuckerberg appeared to rub salt in the wound by tweeting a Spider-Man meme to mark the launch of the new platform on Wednesday.

While the rollout of Threads may have irked Musk, who sent the Meta chief a cease-and-desist letter, he still has one up on Zuckerberg.

Musk's net worth soared by $106 billion this year to $243 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Zuckerberg, however, got just $60 billion richer, with his net worth now standing at $106 billion.

Most of Musk's wealth, which peaked in 2021 at about $338 billion, is tied to his stake in Tesla. Shares in the EV maker have skyrocketed 153% this year, leaving it worth $860 billion on Friday.

Meta is not too far behind Tesla, with its stock up 132% this year to leave it worth $744 billion.

Tensions have rising between the pair over Meta's new platform, with Musk accusing Meta of hiring former Twitter staff to help build the "copycat" app.

"Threads is just Instagram minus pics, which makes no sense, given that thirst pics are the main reason people use that app," Musk tweeted. "How many times have you read comments on Insta pics & wished there were more? Personally, never."

The situation adds another level of intrigue to the billionaires' planned cage fight, after Zuckerberg seemingly accepted Musk's invitation to battle out their differences.

"I'm up for a cage match if he is lol," Musk tweeted, while Zuckerberg quickly fired back in an Instagram story: "Send Me Location."

Meta and Twitter didn't respond to requests for comment from Insider, made outside normal working hours.
