  • Almost 4,000 people signed up for Hive.com on Monday, far above the site's normal average, per MarketWatch.
  • Many of those signing up had mistaken the management platform for social-media site, Hive Social.

Thousands of users mistakenly signed up for a management firm called Hive.com instead of the buzzy Twitter alternative, Hive Social.

MarketWatch first reported the news.

Almost 4,000 people signed up for Hive.com on Monday, far above the site's normal average, the news outlet reported.

Many of the people who registered had mistaken the site for Hive Social, which is quickly becoming a favored alternative to Twitter. Hive Social is a mobile-only platform that is similar to Twitter but doesn't use any of the algorithms that control what users see.

"They don't read anything. They just click and sign up," Hive.com's chief marketing officer, Zuzanna Wilson, told MarketWatch. She said Hive.com had also seen a 330% increase in its recent daily web traffic.

Representatives for Hive.com did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Wilson said people had also been tagging Hive.com on Twitter, prompting a 1,600% increase in the company's engagement on Twitter recently.

"The majority of these posts are words of gratitude for a Twitter alternative," Wilson said. "But Hive.com is also being tagged when there are any issues with Hive Social — logging in, posting, or people are unhappy with Hive Social's conduct as a company — which could be detrimental to our brand."

Wilson said the company had introduced a form in their welcome email to make it easier for people to get their accounts deleted.

Hive Social has exploded in popularity as some social-media users look for an alternative to Twitter. Some of Elon Musk's early decisions as Twitter's owner have been controversial, sparking an exodus of public figures and pushing some users to seek out an alternative platform.
