The next major 'Grand Theft Auto' game is now in 'active development,' Rockstar says
- The highly-anticipated next entry in the "Grand Theft Auto" series is now in development.
- The game is likely to be named "Grand Theft Auto VI."
After nearly a decade since the launch of "Grand Theft Auto V," Rockstar Games announced on Friday morning that the next entry in the series is in "active development."
Moreover, development of that new entry is "well underway," the studio said.
No details about the new game were revealed, but the Rockstar Games blog post announcing its next project made a promise: "With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered."
Rockstar is famous for creating some of the world's best-selling and most critically acclaimed blockbusters: "Grand Theft Auto" and "Red Dead Redemption." The company's last game, "Red Dead Redemption 2," was released in 2018, and its last "Grand Theft Auto" entry launched way back in 2013.
Nearly 10 years after the launch of "Grand Theft Auto V," the game continues to quietly dominate. As of late 2021, it had sold over 155 million copies — making it the second best-selling game of all-time behind "Minecraft," according to Rockstar and Microsoft.
That's because it keeps selling, regularly appearing in the top 20 best-selling games list in any given month, largely due to the ongoing popularity of its online mode.
As for "Grand Theft Auto VI," it remains to be seen where the game will be set, how "GTA Online" will work, and even what platforms it will launch on. Rockstar said it will share more, "as soon as we are ready."
In the meantime, a virtual reality version of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" is also in the works for Meta's Quest 2 headset. Launch details on "San Andreas" have yet to be announced.
