There are more than 500 characters up for consideration to join the newest slate of emoji.
Most are variations on existing emoji that only face one way, like the car or running person, which both face left.

Have you noticed a lot of the emoji on your phone point left? Whether it's a car, a person walking, or a dog, many of the emoji at your fingertips are designed to face leftward.
For example, most animal emoji on iOS look to the left, with a few exceptions, like the owl and lizard.Sarah Jackson/Insider
Unicode Consortium, the organization responsible for approving all emoji before they can make it to our phones, has also taken note. In Emoji 15.1, the newest slate of upcoming emoji, Unicode wants to provide alternatives to existing emoji that only face one direction, so users can show, say, a person running to the right instead of the left.

The list of recommendations for Emoji 15.1 spans 578 characters. That doesn't mean, of course, that we're getting 578 new emoji; most of these are just variations to support different directions for emoji.
