SpaceX's former talent chief took "the bad with the good" when working for Elon Musk. "If you mess with the recipe you mess with the magic," Dolly Singh told a new BBC documentary.

"The Elon Musk Show" uses interviews with his family, friends, employees – and enemies – to explain his rise to become the world's richest man.

In the second of three episodes due to be broadcast on October 19, Singh – who who worked for SpaceX between 2008 and 2013 – said her former boss was never satisfied, but "that's what makes him who he is."

She added: "I think he's an incredible gift to the world. He's arguably the best leader on the face of the planet."

However, working for the world's richest man requires anyone to take "the bad with the good, because if you mess with the recipe you might mess with the magic," Singh told the documentary.

She said Musk's brain was "fundamentally more efficient" than those of other people. Although there were times she would disagree with Musk, "he probably thought it through in a way I haven't thought about it," Singh added.

The former SpaceX staffer concluded the second episode with the comment: "If he asks me to jump, I'm going to ask him how high."

Colette Bridgman, Tesla's marketing chief from 2004 until 2017, was also interviewed for the second episode. While Musk is well known for his often controversial tweets, she said he sometimes did not think about the consequences his words might have – or simply "doesn't care."

In the first episode broadcast on October 12, Jim Ambras, a vice-president at Musk's first venture called Zip2, said that he would "get really angry that the entire company wasn't there in the office at 9 o'clock at night" after "looking to see who was sitting at their cubes."

"The Elon Musk Show" won't be broadcast outside the UK, the BBC said, citing rights issues. The first episode is now available on its iPlayer streaming service.
