Sony has made an official announcement confirming that it’s developing a PlayStation handheld device, aiming to enhance the accessibility of playing PS5 games. The revelation took place during the recent PlayStation Showcase event, where the project was unveiled under the name Project Q.“We will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi,” Jim Ryan, who is president and chief executive officer, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said during the PlayStation Showcase. “Internally known as ‘Project Q,’ it has an 8-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.”
According to a press release from Sony, the upcoming PlayStation handheld, known as Project Q, will boast an LCD screen capable of running games at a maximum resolution of 1080p and a smooth frame rate of 60fps through Wi-Fi connectivity. Notably, this handheld will incorporate the features of the DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. While the exact release date and pricing details were not disclosed by Sony, the Q handheld is scheduled to debut later this year.
As per the disclosure found in the footnotes of Sony's presentation, the Project Q handheld is intended to function as an accessory to the PlayStation 5 console. It necessitates the installation of games directly onto the PS5 and does not possess the capability to play games natively, similar to devices like the Steam Deck or smartphones, nor does it support game streaming from the cloud. This implies that gameplay on the Q handheld is limited to Wi-Fi streaming within the vicinity of the PS5.
However, it's worth noting that future updates or developments could potentially introduce cloud gaming support for the device.
