Some customers are complaining that a $3,000 temperature-controlled mattress that's praised by Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg is prone to leaks

A high-tech mattress company whose mattresses retail for about $3,000 – and have the stamp of approval from tech's elite like Elon Musk – is reportedly prone to leaks.

One customer shared a photo on Twitter over the weekend that showed a large wet patch on his Eight Sleep mattress, which is temperature-controlled using water. Other customers were then quick to chime in and share similar experiences with their own Eight Sleep products, Bloomberg reported. These tweets have prompted jokes online about wetting the bed and blaming the mattress.

The company's "Pod 2" mattress typically retails for about $2,995, while its newer "Pod 3" model is listed on its site for $3,395.

These mattresses are designed to help calibrate sleep through features that "dynamically heat and cool" the bed, as well as offering a "thermal alarm" that can help wake up the user, according to the company's website.

Each mattress comprises multiple layers, and its temperature control comes from "hydropowered technology," it says online. A device called the "Hub" is placed next to the bed and supplies water to help regulate the temperature. A representative for Eight Sleep did not confirm that this is the cause of the leaks.

These mattresses have also drawn endorsements online from the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and The New York Times journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin.

A representative for Eight Sleep told Insider that the company sends out warranty replacements immediately when customers report leaks and takes such complaints, "extremely seriously."

"A small fraction of our users have experienced leaks and we've worked tirelessly to improve this," the representative said in an email.

The representative also said that its newer model, Pod 3, includes updates that address the leak issue.

"For example, the latest Pod 3 has more durable materials, a special waterproof layer, and is rigorously tested to simulate 10 years of use and as a result leaks are rare," they added.
