Samsung's $2,000 foldable phone is reportedly getting a successor, and we just got our first look in a major leak

• Samsung is reportedly working on a sequel to its first foldable smartphone, the $2,000 Galaxy Fold.
• The Galaxy Z Fold 2 reportedly appeared in a blurry photo over the weekend, care of a trusted smartphone leaker who goes by the name "Ice Universe."
• Visually, the phone appears to be very similar to the previous model, but reports suggest it has a larger screen and an improved camera.

The second version of Samsung's controversial $2,000 foldable smartphone is reportedly on the way, and we may have just gotten our first look at it.

Smartphone leaker Ice Universe posted two images of the device which appear to be pulled from Samsung's own marketing materials.

The images depict the "Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2" — a slight name alteration from the first model, which was known as the Samsung Galaxy Fold, that brings it in line with Samsung's other foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip.

The new smartphone, which is a successor to 2019's $2,000 Samsung Galaxy Fold, is expected to be announced on August 5 during a Samsung press event.

So, what's different about this year's model?

We've yet to learn many of the details, but a report in 9to5Google pegs the Galaxy Fold sequel as having a larger outside screen — the original phone had a paltry 4.6-inch external display, which pushed owners to fold out the full screen for most uses. Rumors from earlier this year also point to a larger internal display, an improved rear camera, and a potentially lower price point.

What will be front of mind for many potential buyers, though, is the major durability issues Samsung ran into with the original Galaxy Fold. The phone's launch had to be outright delayed by several months after review units were plagued with issues.
