Rockstar Games, the game studio behind the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise, confirmed on Monday that a massive hack led to the leak of footage from the next game in the series.

"We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including footage for the next Grand Theft Auto," Rockstar wrote in a statement published on Twitter.

"We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way," the statement continued. "Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned ..."

On Saturday, over 90 gameplay videos from "Grand Theft Auto VI" were leaked online to GTAForums, a "Grand Theft Auto fan site, by a user with the screen name "teapotuberhacker." The videos were then widely shared.

On Sunday, the hacker provided contact information and a note saying, "I am looking to negotiate a deal."

The hacker also took credit for last week's Uber hack, according to The Verge.

"Grand Theft Auto" is one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. "Grand Theft Auto V" is the second-best selling game ever, Rockstar's parent company Take-Two said earlier this year, with 160 million copies sold.
