Qualcomm has announced that it is working on ARM-based processors for Windows 11 PCs that can compete with Apple's M-series processors. The company has said that it will be “designed to set the performance benchmark for Windows PCs”.

The samples of the upcoming processor would be available nine months prior to the product launches featuring the Qualcomm SoC in 2023. Interestingly, the chip will be designed by the Nuvia team, which was acquired by Qualcomm for $1.4 billion earlier this year. Nuvia was founded by former Apple employees who worked on A-series chipsets that power the iPhone and iPad. Their expertise in developing the Qualcomm chipset could help make major improvements in the Windows PC performance.

The competition

Currently, Windows PC processors are dominated by Intel and AMD. Apple moved away from relying on Intel for its processor by bringing the M1 chip last year. This year, it has set new standards with the newly-launched M1 Pro and M1 Max chips with the 2021 MacBook Pro laptops.

With Qualcomm re-entering the market, it would pose a challenge to not only Apple but also Intel and AMD that have taken a hit since the launch of M1 chips. Going by the past performance, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx processors for PC could not make inroads with its offerings.

What’s on offer?

Qualcomm wants to set performance benchmarks with its upcoming chip and become a direct competitor for Apple’s M-series processors. The company also aspires to lead in “sustained performance and battery life.” Apart from this, it also promises to scale its Adreno GPUs and offer desktop-class gaming support in its future products.

While it is too early to comment on the performance expected from the Qualcomm processors, its development will take some time. By then, other chipmakers would have advanced their offerings. However, it is nice to see more competition in the market, which can help customers make better choices and improve the offerings.
