Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is reportedly working on launching its own chipset, which the company intends to use for its future smartphones. The company has reportedly been working on this for some time now.

According to a tweet by popular tipster Ice Universe, Oppo is working on the chipset independently and it will be used by the company in its smartphones in 2024. It is not yet known if it will be used in flagship or affordable smartphones.

Oppo to join the likes of Samsung and Apple

While most companies use chipsets from Qualcomm or MediaTek, companies like Apple and Samsung have been using their own chipsets for a long time. Google recently joined the list after it launched the Tensor chipset. With the launch of its own chipset, Oppo will become the fourth major company to use its own chipset for its smartphones.

Huawei, which had the Kirin brand of chipsets, has stopped production after US government bans.

Oppo hires thousands

The tipster has added that Oppo has hired a chip development team of “thousands of people.” With the launch of the chipset, the company aims to minimize its dependence on other companies, such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.

A report in 2021 suggested that Oppo will join hands with Taiwan’s TSMC to use the chipset maker’s 3nm process to mass produce smartphone chipsets.

Will OnePlus and Realme use Oppo’s chipsets?

At the moment, there is no information on whether other brands under the BBK Electronics umbrella will use Oppo’s chipset or not.

Oppo and OnePlus have been using similar technology and software. While their attempt to merge OxygenOS and ColorOS fell through, OxygenOS is heavily inspired by ColorOS. Similarly, OnePlus already uses Oppo technology, such as 150W SUPERVOOC wired charging for its OnePlus 10T smartphone.

Realme also uses a ColorOS-inspired Realme UI for its devices, equipping them with SUPERVOOC fast charging.

It is quite possible that these brands will also use Oppo’s chipsets in the future.
