One cable to charge them all – What Apple’s jump to USB-C means for customers

Apple announced several new products at its Wonderlust event on Tuesday night, including the iPhone 15 series, Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2 and the AirPods Pro 2nd Gen. The event also marked Apple completely adopting the USB-C port and thus abandoned its lightning port.

While it is known that Apple’s move to the USB-C port was because of EU’s regulations to offer a common charger, it is important to understand what impact this may have on existing and future customers.

Will you have to buy a USB-C cable for the iPhone 15 series?

If you are planning on purchasing the new iPhone 15 series, you don’t have to worry about getting a new cable. The iPhone 15 series will ship with a USB-C cable in the box.

One cable to charge them all

USB-C cable has now become the standard with several devices now supporting it. The iPhone 15 series, the AirPods Pro Gen 2, iPad and the MacBook all support USB-C charging, meaning you will have to carry a single USB-C cable to charge these devices and will no longer have to carry multiple cables.

Existing Lightning cables

If you are someone who has purchased a cable recently and are planning on making the jump from your existing iPhone to the iPhone 15 series, this cable won’t be of any use to you. However, you don’t have to worry about getting a USB-C cable as Apple is including a USB-C cable with the new iPhones.

Two cables if you have older accessories

If you have older devices like the earlier AirPods Pro, you will have to carry two cables if you are planning on purchasing the new iPhone 15. If you do not wish to carry two USB-C cables, you can get the USB-C to Lightning Adapter from Apple but that will set you back by ₹2,900.

Charge your AirPods Pro 2nd Gen with the iPhone 15

Apple has revealed that iPhone 15 users will be able to charge their AirPods Pro 2nd Gen or other USB-C devices using their iPhone using a USB-C to USB-C cable, which may come in handy if you need to charge the device urgently.

Will other USB Type-C cables work?

At the moment, it is not clear if USB-C cables from other companies will work properly with the iPhone 15 series. Apple’s Lightning cables were equipped with “Made for Apple” certification that limited non-certified cables to lesser speeds, forcing users to pay a premium to Apple for its cables.

Apple has not revealed if its USB-C cables will also come with a “Made for Apple” certification. Thus, while you will be able to use your existing USB-C cables to charge and transfer data, it is not clear if they will offer the same speeds as Apple’s cables.
