X CEO Linda Yaccarino disputed reports that X is completely gutting its election integrity team, despite Elon Musk seeming to confirm this just hours before.

Speaking at Vox's Code Conference on Wednesday, Yaccarino said that this global team, which is tasked with monitoring attempts to manipulate the platform for political purposes, is "growing."

The Information reported earlier Wednesday that the company is cutting around half the team responsible for fighting election fraud and disinformation, despite it having previously said it would expand it.

"It's an issue we take very seriously," Yaccarino said in an interview with CNBC's Julia Boorstin at the conference on Wednesday, as reported by The Verge.

"And contrary to the comments that were made, there is a robust and growing team at X that is wrapping their arms around election integrity," she said.

But earlier that day, Musk seemed to confirm that this team had been disbanded.

"Oh you mean the "Election Integrity" Team that was undermining election integrity?" he wrote on X in response to a post about the reported cuts. "Yeah, they're gone," he said.

X told Insider that its Trust and Safety division has been restructured to meet the demands of the EU's Digital Services Act, with responsibilities for disinformation, impersonation, and election integrity being expanded across the wider team and hiring ongoing.

The company also said that several members of the election integrity team were facing disciplinary action for reasons that it is unable to disclose.

The news comes as X faces pressure over the spread of disinformation on the platform, with an EU report finding that the site had the highest proportion of Russian disinformation of any of the major social media platforms.

Despite hiring Yaccarino to replace him as CEO earlier this year, Musk has continued to announce new product features and policy changes on his X feed.

Sources familiar with the matter told Insider that Musk continues to call the shots at the company, with one saying that the billionaire frequently makes decisions without Yaccarino's input and "completely undermines her."

During the interview on Wednesday, Yaccarino denied that Musk was difficult to work with and fired back against suggestions that she was a "CEO in name only."
