Jennifer Aniston has revealed that her decision to join Instagram was largely a strategic move to promote and build excitement ahead of her new Apple TV show.
Aniston is starring alongside Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell in a series called "The Morning Show," which debuted November 1 exclusively on Apple's new subscription streaming service, Apple TV Plus. Aniston and Witherspoon recently sat down for an interview with The Guardian, during which Aniston said that she joined Instagram "mainly" to promote the new Apple TV show.
Additionally, Aniston said that part of her reasoning for getting on Instagram was to gain some more control over which parts of her life are made public, and what aspects are kept personal.
"People are already in my panty drawers all the time," Aniston told the Guardian. "And I want them out of my panty drawers. But now I can decide which pair to show them."
Aniston debuted her Instagram account on October 15, and her first post was a selfie alongside her "Friends" costars. Almost immediately, news of Aniston's Instagram debut led to an influx of followers, likes, and comments - which led to technical problems and made it difficult for some users to follow Aniston's account. The actress also quickly set a Guinness World Record by hitting 1 million followers in just five hours and 16 minutes.
Although Aniston only publicly joined Instagram last month, the "Friends" star later revealed after that she had been lurking on the platform for a while now, thanks to a secret "stalker account" she created.
"When I was thinking about doing [Instagram], I figured it was time to understand the world and dip my toe into the social-media pool," Aniston told Jimmy Kimmel on his late night show.
Aniston has also said she's already taking measures to ensure she's doesn't become "addicted" to the app.
"I decided to get two phones," the actress told the Los Angeles Times. "So one sits in my office and when that [Instagramming] has to happen, I'll commit to that."
